The fight for abortion rights is happening right now in state legislatures.
If Roe is struck down or gutted, 26 states are certain or likely to ban abortion.
These 26 states either have pre-Roe laws making abortion illegal or Republican majorities that are hostile to reproductive rights. States like Mississippi and Texas are the most notorious – but if Roe falls, we’re likely to see even more draconian policies across all these states. Building Democratic power everywhere is critical to mounting a strong opposition to Republican-led attacks and blunting the worst of these laws.
Republicans winning the legislature in these states will result in bills restricting reproductive freedom
Republicans are targeting Democratic-held chambers in these states in 2022. If they win a majority, they could introduce and pass extreme abortion restrictions or outright bans. It’s critical Democrats protect their power in these states to protect abortion access.
What state legislators are saying
Almost 50 years after the Roe decision was made, I’m still thinking about the brave women that fought for everyone’s right to access an abortion. That fight is raging now more than ever. We must honor their legacy and their memory right now by doing everything we can to defend abortion rights in the states.Representative Ann JohnsonTexas
With the fate of reproductive rights likely falling to the states, we should take this moment as a rallying cry to take an active interest in investing, organizing, protecting, and winning Democratic state legislatures.Senator Winnie BrinksMichigan
We all have a stake in ensuring that Americans have safe, affordable, and accessible reproductive care. That’s why we must get involved in protecting and expanding Democratic power in state legislatures so that we can pass abortion rights into law and ensure that all pregnant people have access to the care they need.Senate Minority Leader Rebecca RiosArizona
